nintendo is taking down the 3ds and wii u eshops next year
and they had this lovingly made totally not taunting message to leave about their virtual console legacy they’re destroying
(that they’ve, fun fact, taken down from their site now :])
this pisses me off so much because nintendo is AWARE we want their legacy of games put on their best selling system (literally, outside of the combined sales of every nintendo DS, lite, DSi, and XL, and the GB and GBC’s combined sales, the switch is at the top)
and yet they still do not care. it’s not about them not having this content either because 1 the wii u vc and 3ds vc. exist. and 2, even for stuff that isnt on the virtual console yet, we’ve been given internal proof from previous big nintendo leaks (namely the gigaleak) that nintendo does not mess around when it comes to keeping backups of their older content.
its not a lack of money either, nintendo is literally one of the richest companies in japan. it’s just. a lack of caring
last thing im gonna say about this is that the 3DSand Wii Uboth have excellent, actively updated guides for softmodding them to run homebrew. the Wiiand DSi do as well!

Anyway you used to need dedicated hardware (or Linux), but now it can run on any one windows or Mac device on your WiFi network, even your regular computer, and get adblocking for your whole WiFi network including phones, consoles, streaming-TVs, etc
edge emulation (missing some consoles; CD-based games come in compressed formats such as CHD; very fast DL speed)
cdromance (mostly has games for CD-based consoles; games come in uncompressed iso or bin/cue; has a lot of pre-patched rom hacks; medium-fast DL speed)
alvro collection spreadsheet (pretty much everything, including many newer consoles; slightly inconvenient to navigate; download site limits to 1 download every 30 mins, can be worked around with vpn; very fast DL speed)
planetemu (largely in french; has a lot of obscure titles other sites lack; fast DL speed)
ROMs Megathread/Archive (everything, really; slow DL speed; usually a last resort if you can’t find something anywhere else)
i don’t currently recommend vimm’s lair due to very slow speeds and offering nothing that isn’t on other sites
sites offering 3ds/switch games get shut down very frequently so i won’t be linking them in order to keep this post from getting outdated but you can find them if you snoop around reddit (the 3dspiracy and switchpirates subs in particular) a little
